Hurricane Charley made landfall with the coast of southwestern Florida on August 13, 2004 as a Category 4 hurricane. It was the second major hurricane of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season, and the strongest hurricane to hit southwest Florida since Hurricane Donna which struck the coast in 1960.

The hurricane had winds of 150mph at its peak and caused nearly 10" of rainfall in some areas of the state. Wreaking havoc from the southern tip of North Captiva island through Port Charlotte and northeast through Orlando, Charley created damages in excess of $13 million (2004 USD) just in the state of Florida.

Due to the incredible devastation caused by Hurricane Charley, President George W. Bush declared Florida a federal disaster area and the name Charley was retired from the rotating lists of tropical cyclone names by the World Meteorological Organization.
