Although not a major hurricane (Category 3 or above), Hurricane Irene produced significant damage across southern Florida. At its peak, Hurricane Irene was a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 110mph.

Hurricane Irene caused roughly $800 million (USD 1999) in damage and 18 deaths mostly due to its immense rainfall (between 10 and 20 inches in the Miami metropolitan area).

After the moderate beach erosion caused by the previous hurricanes (Dennis and Floyd), Irene swept in and eroded the beaches so significantly that many of the foundations of private homes were exposed (leaving some uninhabitable)
